Several studies have found that time spent with friends and family makes a big difference to how happy we feel, generally. Considering it is a pleasant time !
Harvard happiness expert Daniel Gilbert explains it:
“We are happy when we have family, we are happy when we have friends and almost all the other things we think make us happy are actually just ways of getting more family and friends.”
Spending quality time with the closes people in your life is essential to maintain your wellbeing. In fact, George Vaillant who is the director of a 72-year Grant Study of the lives of 268 men stated that what he learned from this study is: “That the only thing that really matters in life are your relationships to other people.”
2. Eat plenty of brightly coloured fruits and vegetables
So, you may ask, what is it about colourful fruits and vegetables that helps us maintain happiness? Well, it turns out that a heightened level of carotenoid antioxidant – the magic ingredient that benefits our neurological health. The Harvard study found that carotenoids have strong health-enhancing qualities – so strong, in fact, that individuals whose diets contained large amounts of this antioxidant were revealed to be more likely to exercise and have an advanced degree and be happier!
3. Sleep more
We know that sleep helps our bodies to recover from the day and repair themselves, and that it helps us focus and be more productive. It turns out, it’s also important for our happiness.
New study finds that there is a perfect excuse for a siesta! People who stay awake throughout the day become progressively more sensitive to negative emotions. In contrast, those who take an afternoon nap are desensitised to negative emotions yet more responsive to positive ones. The new finding builds on past research by showing that not only does sleep deprivation cause emotional problems, a sleep boost can bring emotional advantages.
