Crohn’s Disease & Probiotics
The importance of gut health extends further than many of us realise! For example; Crohn’s Disease and ulcerative colitis are life long gastrointestinal disorders that commonly present themselves in children, adolescents and adulthood. Collectively known as Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), the conditions are increasing globally, with Australia having one of the highest prevalence in the world! This is very unfortunate! More than 75,000 Australians live with these conditions, with numbers expected to increase to more than 100,000 by 2022 (Crohns & Colitis Australia).
Only in recent years has there been a large body of evidence from genetic and bacteriological studies indicating that the intestinal flora is the essential factor in driving the Crohn’s inflammatory process in genetically susceptible individuals.
This is just another reason why we should all be taking good care of our gut health!
There are so many ways we can do this and one simple way to manipulate and optimise your gut microflora is through probiotic supplementation.
Researchers have discovered probiotic bacteria can influence the activity of immune cells and the cells that line the intestines. Specifically, these friendly bacteria appear to block disease-causing bacteria from sticking to the lining of the intestines. Of course fermented foods and drinks are very important, and probiotic supplementation should also be useful!
