Gelatin and Gut Health

Thank you for sending me questions!

Some of you raised an important question regarding the therapeutic dosage of gelatin consumption in gut healing journey to aid healing.

Gelatin is a key therapeutic agent in gut healing program.

Traditional cultures consumed far more gelatin, then us, because we used to cook more with animal bones.  A practice that is forgotten in modern world and sadly gelatin it is lacking in most of our modern diets.

When you embark on gut healing journey, you will need to add this ingredient back to your diet because it has got wonderful qualities that help you heal and seal the gut lining.

Gelatin is basically cooked collagen and comes from the bones, hides and connective tissues of animals. Gelatin makes up almost one-third of all the protein in the human body and not having enough of it affects our joints, our skin, and our guts. It comes as a powder that can be used to make jelly, or jello, panna cotta, marshmallows, gummie bears and more.

You can purchase it in its powder form and cook with it but what I recommend you to use it in its unrefined form, as a whole food. You guessed it, I am talking about homemade bone broth/stock, chicken stock yet again ;-). This food will have more therapeutic effect on your gut and it also is delicious!

You should be having 3 to 5 cups of bone broth with your meal as a starter, or between your meal if you want to get the therapeutic benefits. It is advisable that you add a probiotic culture to it in form of sauerkraut or kimchi juice. This will also deliver another therapeutic agent; the probiotic bacteria.

I keep these foods as a staples in my diet to help strengthen my family’s health and you will certainly benefit from including these in your diet too. When you finish your gut healing journey a cup of stock a day will keep you well nourished.
