New approach in treatment of Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is diagnosed when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin (reduced insulin production) and/or the insulin does not work effectively and/or the cells of the body do not respond to insulin effectively (known as insulin resistance)

It usually develops in adults over the age of 45 years but is sadly increasingly occurring in younger age groups including children, adolescents and young adults.

It is managed with a combination of regular physical activity, healthy eating and weight reduction. As type 2 diabetes is often progressive, most people will need oral medications and/or insulin injections in addition to lifestyle changes over time.

Recently I attended seminar where I have found out that there is a new approach to the treatment of Diabetes Type 2 which targets the manipulation of gut microbiota (1, 2, 3, 4).

We are looking at shifting the microbiota population balance in the gut through the diet and supplementation in ways that affect the metabolic health.

This does not mean that you should stop taking your medication and start taking a probiotic supplementĀ instead.

However, it would be worth for people with Type 2 Diabetes to investigate what their gut microbiota is composed of, and take an action, if the test shows that there is a need to correct the microbial population balance in the gut.

You achieve this with the help of Introduction GAPS diet, increasing consumption of fermented foods, probiotic supplementation and adoption of a balanced diet, such as Mediterranean diet as a long therm strategy to maintain better digestive health.

Early studies show that through manipulation of gut microbiota we can increase insulin sensitivity and decrease the desire to eat that both help to prevent Diabetes Type 2.

As you know microbiota is my special area of interest and any new findings that become available, I happily share here it with you, to help you all out.

I hope you enjoyed this post, if you found this information useful please share it with your friends.
