A few weeks ago I asked you to email me any nutrition based questions you might want answers to. Thank you for all of your responses! I am looking forward answering them one by one.
The Question I will focus on this week is:
My mother is 88 years old and her dietician would like her to eat more protein. However she doesn’t have a large appetite and doesn’t eat a lot of meat.
We prefer a lighter vegetarian diet on most days but the dieticians don’t think that we will get the same muscle building properties from plant based sources of protein.
Is there something else that you know of that she could eat that is healthy for her body?
Firstly, let me just say that vegan sources of protein are harder for the body to extract protein from. However, there are foods that are relatively high in protein aside from meat.
Now if it is the case that someone doesn’t like to eat meat, but is not specifically Vegetarian or Vegan, and doesn’t mind animal products then I would highly recommend a few things:
- Bone Broth: A great source of protein and calcium and very easy for the body to digest. Click HERE for the recipe and preparation instructions.
- Eggs: A great source of protein and healthy fats.
- Natural Yogurt: Protein, healthy fats and probiotic goodness.
For animal free sources of protein, I encourage the consumption of the following foods:
- Green Peas
- Chick Peas
- Fermented soy beans = Tempeh

Living a healthy and happy life is important. Eating foods that we love and are good for our body is extremely important to our over all happiness. It is great to be aware of the macro nutrients that we get from different foods, and tailoring your diet around foods that you enjoy is also important.
